ETIAS as requirement for Europe entry

What You Need to Know Before Planning Your Next European Adventure

Is a trip to Europe in your future? There are new entry requirements that you need to know about. Americans do not need a Visa to enter Europe but starting in 2025, they will need prior authorization to travel to Europe. European officials announced two new systems: ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) and EES (European Entry/Exit System). Let’s see what this will mean for you.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorization System. It is a new security measure for travelers wanting to enter countries in the European Union and the Schengen area. European announced this system in 2024, but implementation is delayed to the second half of 2025. This entry requirement is for visa-free travelers, including Americans.

  • Who needs it? Citizens of countries that do not need a visa to enter Europe(Americans, Canadians, Australians). Check the list of countries, to see if you need to apply for an ETIAS.
  • What does it do? The ETIAS is an extra security measure to make sure you are able to enter the EU. It is designed to help catch security threats and prevent illegal immigration. I
  • How long does it take? The application process is quicker than traditional visas. For most people the approval only takes minutes.
  • How much does it cost? The application fee is around $7.28 (7 euros) depending on the exchange rate.

What is EES?

EES is the European Entry/Exit System. This system was announced in 2024 and is expected to roll out in 2025. The EES was created in order to modernize border controls in Europe. Unlike the ETIAS, the EES applies to everyone entering and exiting the EU. This also includes EU citizens.

  • What does it do? It tracks people entering and exiting the EU, ensuring you’re not overstaying your visa.
  • How does it work? It stores your biometric data (fingerprints and facial recognition) that is taken when your passport is scanned upon arrival into the EU.
  • What are the benefits? Reduce wait times at borders, increase security measures, identify those that are overstaying their trip .

The EES is able to track the dates and locations of entry and exit of travelers throughout the EU and Schengen area.

How Do These Changes Affect American Travelers?

  • ETIAS is required: As a visa-free traveler, you’ll need to apply for ETIAS before your trip.
  • EES applies to everyone: Whether you’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, EES will track your entry and exit.
  • Plan ahead: The ETIAS and EES will launch in the second half of 2025, check here for updates.

ETIAS vs. Schengen Visa: What’s the Difference?

What’s the Difference between the two?

  • ETIAS: For visa-free travelers. It’s simple and quick pre-screening process.
  • Schengen Visa: For travelers who need a visa to enter the EU. A more involved process with more requirements.

As American citizens, you’re in the visa-free category, so you’ll need an ETIAS.
