What is a Real ID?

A Real ID is a state issued driver’s license or ID card that meets certain federal security standards. As a result, these IDs are designed to improve security and reduce fraud. How can you tell if you have a Real ID? Real IDs have a star in the top right corner. This star indicates that the identification meets the specified security standards.

Why Do I Need a Real ID?

Although the The Real ID federal law was passed in 2005, the deadline to get a Real ID had been changed many times over the years. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that starting May 7th, 2025, all travelers over the age of 18 will need a Real ID to go through pass through security checkpoints at airports and other federal facilities. After this deadline, you will not be able to use a standard ID to:

  • Board domestic commercial flights
  • Access certain federal buildings, such as courthouses or government offices

How Do I Get a Real ID?

The application process is usually a straightforward process. These are the general steps to get an ID but check the requirements for your state.

Step 1: Check Your Current ID

Before you start the process of applying for a Real ID, check to make sure your current driver’s license /ID card is not already a Real ID. If it has a star in the top right corner, you’re good to go. If not, you need to apply for a Real ID ASAP.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

  • A legal document showing your full legal name
  • Date of Birth
  • Social Security Card
  • Two Proofs of Address: Utility bill, bank statement, rental agreement
  • Proof of Citizenship/Lawful Status in the US: A valid passport, birth certificate, or certificate of naturalization

Step 3: Visit Your Local DMV

Once you have all your documents ready, head to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Some states even allow you to apply for a Real ID online.

Step 4: Fill Out the Application

You can fill out the the application online(if your state allows) or in person at the DMV. Double-check all the information prior to submitting to prevent delays.

Step 5: Receive Your Real ID

Now you wait! Your Real ID will come in the mail in a few weeks depending on the processing time in your state.

What If I Don’t Get a Real ID?

I get it, going to the DMV is not our favorite thing to do. If you don’t want to get the Real ID, no problem. You can still fly domestically but you will need to use an acceptable form of identification such as a passport or permanent resident card. Here is a list of acceptable forms of identification according to TSA.

Going to the DMV may be hassle but it is highly recommended to get a Real ID so you don’t have to carry around multiple forms of identification.
